Why We Bought This Horse

  • Miss Malibu foaled a healthy colt on March 26, 2023. He has been nicknamed "Merlot".
  • Miss Malibu was covered on April 17, 2022, by Frosted and checked in and confirmed in foal on February 7, 2023 (at the Fasig Tipton auction after purchase).   Our anticipation is that this foal will be Maryland-bred.
  • This is a 2022-2023 Individual Foal Offering and is subject to the WVS Individual Foal Program Addendum to the Wasabi Ventures Stables Thoroughbred Management Agreement.
  •   Highlights of the program:
    • Fixed Price on the Offering - No Ongoing Bills
    • Limited Exposure - Like WVS Racing Programs, there is no chance for Future Expenses. If the Foal offering loses money, WVS absorbs those costs
    • Finite Time - The Foal Offering will be liquidated at the time of his/her weaning from the mare, so you know when an offering ends.  Because you are not buying the mare, you have a finite time period of commitment (e.g. 6 to 18 months)
    • Reduced Risk - WVS will only open a Foal Offering once a mare has checked in foal to the chosen stallion
    • Perpetual Breeders Bonuses - Even after the foal is sold, a Club member can continue to earn breeding bonuses for the racing life of the horse.
    • You can watch a video about this program by visiting here.

A big part of Miss Malibu's appeal was the fact that she was carrying a foal by the multiple G1W and hot young sire Frosted.

A winner of the historic, stallion-making Met Mile in blazing fast time and earning a 123 Beyer Speed Figure, Frosted also won the G1 Wood Memorial at 3YO (when he was 2nd in the G1 Belmont to American Pharoah and 3rd in the G1 Travers) and the G1 Whitney at 4, plus was a G2PW 2YO. By Tapit and from the female family of Champion and quality sire Midshipman, Frosted has ranked in the top five of his sire crop in the USA each year he's had runners, and he's also been successful as a shuttle stallion in Australia. His ten Northern Hemisphere stakes winners include the top Maryland-bred 2YO of 2022 in Post Time, the top NY-bred 2YO of 2022 in Arctic Arrogance (who was a close 2nd in the G2 Remsen and then the Jerome earlier this year in open company), plus recent G3W Frosted Over, and he is also the sire of this year's G3W 3YO filly Ice Dancing.

Post Time and Ice Dancing are noteworthy because they are out of Storm Cat-line dams, and Miss Malibu's sire Into Mischief traces tail-male to Storm Cat (and Into Mischief's proclivities as a sire are notoriously similar to those of Storm Cat). In addition to those two stakes winners, Frosted has four more stakes winners (one a G3W) with second dams from the Storm Cat sire-line, so this is a pattern that is working for him. TrueNicks, which actually looks at the Pulpit/Into Mischief cross, rates this pairing a "B+" with G1W White Abarrio and G2W Cilla from the 25 runners bred that way.

Although Frosted was himself strictly a dirt horse, he has sired a pair of all-weather stakes winners so far in his young career at stud (G3W Frosted Over, as well as Cave Hill), and he also has a pair of graded winners on turf in Australia, where he shuttles for Darley. We like that he's shown that versatility given that Miss Malibu's dam, Malibu Pier, was a multiple G2-winning turf runner who also won on all-weather and was G1-placed on dirt in the La Brea, and Miss Malibu's two black-type sisters were Coasted (SW/G1P on turf) and her full-sister Malibu Stacy (multiple graded-placed on dirt). Four-time leading sire Into Mischief is renowned foremost as a dirt sire, but he has also gotten the likes of this year's G1 Pegasus Turf winner Atone. And though Miss Malibu's broodmare sire, Malibu Moon, also tends to be predominantly a dirt influence, he got some very good turf horses, too. Then a little further back, Miss Malibu's family is strictly European turf.

So we are excited to have acquired this in-utero foal as part of the package with Miss Malibu, and anxiously await its arrival in a month or so!
