The BASE PRICE of this foal is $38,100
The young mare Ebb Tide comes from a deep and active family tracing back to her third dam Horns Gray — a Midwestern stakes winner who produced the Grade 1-winning 2YO filly Awesome Humor (herself the dam of a pair of stakes winners and granddam of another).
Another daughter of Horns Gray, Ebb Tide’s second dam Surf Club, did not earn black-type but won six races and six-figures in purse money; and then she out-did her half-sister in the breeding shed by producing G1W Emcee, G2W/G1P Surfer (by Distorted Humor), SW Spring Party (dam of G3W Marzo, by Medaglia d’Oro), and the G3P Baffled (by Distorted Humor, and dam of multiple G1W and now leading sire Constitution, G2W Boynton, and G3W Jacaranda (dam of two black-type 2YOs)). In addition, three of Surf Club’s unraced daughters are also black-type producers: Gabeira (by MDO) is the dam of SW Erase and SPW Doc Amster; Alana B is the dam of SPW Ironsides; and Wipe Out is the dam of G1PW Degree of Risk and second dam of G2W New York Thunder.
Being a daughter of Medaglia d’Oro out of a mare by Distorted Humor, Ebb Tide (who raced twice at 2YO, finishing 2nd first time out before breaking her maiden in her second start at Presque Isle) shares pedigree similarities with many of those successful runners listed above, and after getting a date with the proven veteran Dialed In in 2023 for her first foal, we are excited to send her to Constitution’s brilliant and beautiful son Independence Hall in 2024 — a mating that will result in a foal inbred 2x3 to the full-sisters Baffled (dam of Constitution) and Magdalena Bay (dam of Ebb Tide), with Rasmussen Factor inbreeding to Surf Club.
Ebb Tide
Independence Hall was a brilliant and unbeaten 2YO who earned the top juvenile Beyer Speed Figure of his generation with a 101 in the G3 Nashua, which he won by a dozen lengths in his second start, setting a new stakes record. As a 3YO, he won the Jerome Stakes impressively despite a poor break, and placed in the G3 Sam F. Davis. He returned after a summer break to win a Del Mar allowance first time back, and as a 4YO he was 3rd in the G1 Pegasus behind Knicks Go, 3rd in the G2 Californian, 2nd in the G3 Lukas Classic, and won the G2 Fayette wire-to-wire over Code of Honor, earning a career-best Beyer of 105.
He covered over 200 mares in his first book, and 145 mares in 2023 for his second, which should get him off to a flying start at stud in light of his own precocity — his first 2YOs will run in 2025 when Ebb Tide’s foal is born. Off of a $10,000 stud fee, Independence Hall’s first 25 wealings sold have averaged more than four-times that fee, topped by individuals for $130k, $77k (two) and $75k.
Independence Hall
In addition to the intriguing female family inbreeding, Independence Hall is also from the Tapit/AP Indy sire-line which has produced seven of the black-type runners tracing to Horns Gray, while Constitution has so far thrown seven runners out of MDO mares, of which five are winners, including the G3W Ridin With Biden and SW Conman, plus G1P Golden Principal. So that’s a pretty strong strike rate.
Physically, Independence Hall is a leggy, rangy, well-balanced individual and should help stretch out Ebb Tide’s foal, being as she’s of more average height. Combining all of the above, we can’t wait to see what this pairing produces in 2025!
