Updates on Brethren - Crystal Avalanche Foal

UPDATE 2/8/21: Crystal Avalanche delivered a healthy Brethren colt, who we have nicknamed Cheddar.

Why We Bought This Horse

  • Crystal Avalanche was covered on February 29, 2020, by Bretheren and confirmed in foal.   Our anticipation is that this foal will be Florida bred.
  • This is a 2021 Individual Foal Offering and is subject to the WVS Individual Foal Program Addendum to the Wasabi Ventures Stables Thoroughbred Management Agreement.  Highlights of the program:
    • Fixed Price on the Offering - No Ongoing Bills
    • Limited Exposure - Like WVS Racing Programs, there is no chance for Future Expenses. If the Foal offering loses money, WVS absorbs those costs
    • Finite Time - The Foal Offering will be liquidated at the time of his/her weaning from the mare, so you know when an offering ends.  Because you are not buying the mare, you have a finite time period of commitment (e.g. 6 to 18 months)
    • Reduced Risk - WVS will only open a Foal Offering once a mare has checked in foal to the chosen stallion
    • Perpetual Breeders Bonuses - Even after the foal is sold, a Club member can continue to earn breeding bonuses for the racing life of the horse.
    • You can watch a video about this program by visiting here. https://share.getcloudapp.com/5zu1LPEY

The BASE PRICE of this foal is $14,100

  • Mare Lease/Stallion Fee - $2,750
  • Vanning Expense - $2,000
  • Boarding Fee Estimate - $7,250
  • Vet Estimate - $1,500
  • Registration Fees (Jockey Club and State Fees) - $600

Tidbits from the Pedigree

Crystal Avalanche was acquired pregnant with her first foal on a February 29th cover date to Florida's #2 sire Brethren, meaning she is due to deliver that Florida-bred and -sired foal any day now -- a foal which will be very closely related to the 2020 Grade 3 winner of $629,235 Cookie Dough.

Placed five times in 12 starts on both turf and dirt (earning $29,220), Crystal Avalanche is by the leading young sire Dialed In -- himself a Grade 1-winning 3YO and leading freshman sire of his crop, who has gotten the likes of 2020 Grade 1-winning 2YO Get Her Number and multi-millionaire Gunnevara.

Crystal Avalanche is a half-sister to the aforementioned Cookie Dough -- who has won or placed in a total of eight stakes races (six graded) -- as well as to the stakes-placed winner of $117,125 Poe, and to the winning 2YO Peaky Blinders.  Both of Crystal Avalanche's black-type siblings are by Brethren, the sire that she is currently in foal to.

Crystal Avalanche is out of the winning Fusaichi Pegasus mare Brooke's Valentine, whose own dam Jena Jena was a 3-time stakes winner of $272,888, dam of 6 total winners, and granddam of the Group 1-placed stakes winner Grantland.  Jena Jena is a full-sister to the stakes winner Win With a Wink (also a stakes producer), plus half to the stakes winner Up Like Thunder and to the stakes producers Open Flirt and Blink Twice.

The sire of Crystal Avalanche's foal, Brethren, is the #2 leading sire in Florida as mentioned above.  On the racetrack, he was unbeaten in two starts at 2, won the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis on the Derby trail at 3, and was a stakes winner at 5.  As a sire, Cookie Dough is his best runner so far, and he has also gotten stakes winners Shes a Bullet, Old Time Revival, Ambassador Luna and Scraps, plus 14 more black-type placed runners.  Brethren is a half-brother to Kentucky Derby winner and sire Super Saver, and his dam is a full-sister to Grade 1 winner Girolamo and to the dams of Grade 1 winners Bluegrass Cat and Imagining.

The mating of Brethren with Crystal Avalanche is good for a "B" on TrueNicks, as the Distorted Humor/AP Indy cross has produced Grade 1 winners Serengeti Empress, Cloud Computing, Any Given Saturday, Joking, etc.

This Florida-bred and -sired foal will be eligible for the lucrative Florida program which includes the Florida Stallion Series stakes races, and should be early to mature like his sire's best offspring.
