Why We Bought This Horse

  • Settle It is a 4 YO Kentucky-bred filly and we claimed her at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas.
  • For the Wasabi Ventures Stables safety net, we will put her value at $3,500 as a straight broodmare prospect.  This is a figure we will put on her if we still have her at the end of her racing career.
  • We think we will see improvements in this horse through a training regiment change and also through an eventual switch to grass.
  • The horse will be training under Jason Barkley at the Oaklawn Park.
  • If we still have the horse racing at the end of the meet, our plan will be to move the horse to Monmouth Park for the summer meet.

Tidbits from the Pedigree

Settle It, a 4yo daughter of Square Eddie, is out of the rock-solid broodmare, Meetmeinthewoods. This makes her a full-sister to a stakes winner and another stakes-placed winner. She was 2nd in her debut on dirt as a May 2yo and went on to win at the maiden special weight level on turf at Santa Anita Park.

Her sire, Square Eddie, has been an excellent stallion in California. He currently stands for a lofty $25,000 fee, which is remarkable for a stallion in a regional market. Square Eddie is a son of the great Smart Strike, a stallion also known for siring Curlin, English Channel, and Lookin At Lucky. He was a Grade 1 winner as a 2yo, where he opened up on the Breeders' Futurity field by almost 5 lengths on the wire at Keeneland. He then finished 2nd in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile behind Midshipman. He retired to stud for a single season in 2010 before returning to the track. He rewarded his owners by breaking the 6.5F track record at Santa Anita. By the time he was permanently retired to the breeding shed, he had earned $856,019 in 18 starts.

Square Eddie's best progeny include: Ralis (G1 Hopeful S.; $426,138), Eddie Haskell (G3 Daytona S.; $627,707), Listing (G3 Quick Call S.; $280,400), Ann Arbor Eddie (King Glorious S., California Cup Derby), B Squared (Silky Sullivan S., California Flag H., Thor's Echo H.), and Jimmy Bouncer (Harris Farms S.). The latter, Jimmy Bouncer, is actually a full-brother to this filly, Settle It.

Meetmeinthewoods is a multiple stakes-placed winner by General Meeting. In her 14 race career, she earned $187,336 with 3 wins and 5 additional placings. She broke her maiden sprinting on the dirt at Hollywood Park by more than 5 lengths. In only her second career start, she was tossed into G1 company in the Hollywood Starlet where she finished 4th in a field of 11. She placed third in two stakes during her career, including in the CTBA Marian Stakes and the Bangles and Beads Stakes. Her owners and trainer were so impressed with her raw ability that she actually raced against Grade 1 company on three different occasions. Although she did place several times on the turf, she was primarily campaigned on the dirt and was most successful from 6F to a mile.

Each of Settle It's siblings are also by Square Eddie, and all 5 to have raced are winners. The aforementioned Jimmy Bouncer is the most successful of Meetmeinthewoods' progeny, with 20 career starts from 3 to 7 and $440,218 in earnings. He went undefeated in his first 4 starts and competed in the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at the end of his 4yo season. As a 5yo, he won the Harris Farms S. and later finished 2nd in the same stakes the following year. He proved himself to be strong while sprinting on all surfaces, with wins on dirt, turf, and all-weather. Rookie Mistake is a winning 3yo that has raced 7 times, with $102,075 in earnings, with 2 wins and 3 additional top 3 finishes. He broke his maiden by over 3 lengths while sprinting on the Santa Anita turf at the start of this year and placed in the Baffle Stakes just last month.

Meetmeinthewoods' dam is the unraced Woodman mare, Star of the Woods. This means that Meetmeinthewoods is a half-sister to Canadian Champion Grass Mare, Solid Appeal (by Successful Appeal), and It Tiz (by Tiznow), who won both the Megahertz Stakes and Le Cle Stakes. Through It Tiz, Star of the Woods is the granddam of G1 Cotillion winner and $1.1 million earner, It Tiz Well (sired by Arch).
